Fake HR apps reportedly used a real installer screen to deploy remote-access software

TECHNOLOGY & SOFTWARENEEDS REVIEWUpdated:

A security firm reported a campaign offering fake Windows desktop apps for three unnamed US HR and payroll platforms. The reported catch: none of the impersonated providers offers a desktop client.

Fake HR apps reportedly used a real installer screen to deploy remote-access software

Legitimate components behind a nonexistent desktop product

According to the report, the download shows a real Microsoft installer while also quietly installing ConnectWise ScreenConnect, a legitimate remote-management product. The reported setup is configured for unattended access, with its usual victim-facing indicators disabled.

What makes the alleged scheme unusual is that the page, hosting, installer window and remote-management software are all described as legitimate components. The mismatch is the supposed app itself: a desktop version of a service whose real provider does not sell one. The number of actual victims is unknown; the report said the three downloads had 291 GitHub downloads, a count that may include researchers and automated systems.
