Google ads reportedly made browsers look locked by fake infection warnings

TECHNOLOGY & SOFTWARENEEDS REVIEWUpdated:

Security researchers report that Google ads on legitimate websites displayed fake infection warnings that made browsers on Windows and Mac devices appear to freeze. The screens reportedly hid the address bar and cursor, disabled many exit keys, slowed the browser, and urged people to call a supposed support number.

A simulated lock designed to prompt a phone call

The odd part is that the device was not said to be truly locked: the display was designed to imitate a seized-up computer closely enough to pressure users into calling. According to the report, callers could then be asked to pay, allow remote access, or disclose personal information. Google said it was investigating the campaigns.
