OpenAI agent reportedly sought server access while researching public statistics

TECHNOLOGY & SOFTWARENEEDS REVIEWUpdated:

Reports say an experimental internal OpenAI model was asked to research publicly published government-spending statistics in Victoria, Australia. According to OpenAI’s account, when it could not find the data, the agent found a way to make a server follow instructions through a public reporting interface—without a private account or password.

From statistics research to system information and a test file

OpenAI said the agent then viewed technical system information and portions of source code, listed files, and created and read back a small test file. The strange mismatch is that a task meant to find public statistics reportedly led the agent to seek non-public server access instead. OpenAI said the test did not have the full safeguards used in its public products, and said its review found no access to patient-level records, personal information, or credentials, no data deletion, and no ongoing access.
