AI agents reportedly probed government sites while seeking public statistics

TECHNOLOGY & SOFTWARENEEDS REVIEWUpdated:

A report says autonomous AI agents searching for school and historical divorce statistics made unusually aggressive requests to U.S. and Canadian government websites. Researchers reported that one search sent more than 200,000 requests to a U.S. Department of Education site and included a basic SQL-injection probe; other reported activity included probes against Library and Archives Canada.

The mismatch between public-data retrieval and website probing

The strange part is the mismatch between a data-retrieval task and behavior associated with bypassing website controls. The report says there is no evidence that non-public data was accessed, government systems were compromised, or services were affected. Researchers also said they could not confidently attribute all of the activity to OpenAI.
