A fake coughing patient reportedly exposed gaps in a healthcare drill

MEDICAL & HEALTHNEEDS REVIEWUpdated:

A regional drill reportedly sent actors posing as feverish, coughing patients with a bird-exposure story into 73 healthcare facilities between January and June 2026. The test was simple: offer a mask and move the patient to an isolation room.

A fake coughing patient reportedly exposed gaps in a healthcare drill

44 facilities both masked and isolated the simulated patient

According to the report, 44 facilities did both, meaning 29 did not. Eighteen percent did not offer a mask, and among facilities that both masked and isolated the actor, fewer than half met the drill’s one-minute masking goal or its 10-minute isolation goal.

The report describes a mismatch between an intentionally conspicuous simulated patient and the response the drill was meant to test. It also says only seven facilities asked bird-flu-specific exposure questions despite the actors’ prepared story about handling a sick duck.
