City prayer policy reportedly led to a dispute over undoing a “curse”

HUMAN & SOCIETYNEEDS REVIEWUpdated:

A report says an Ottumwa, Iowa, city council meeting opened with a Satan-themed invocation after the council adopted a policy allowing invocations. Another attendee then called it a curse on the city and urged officials to reverse it; the mayor instead called for a moment of silence before the meeting continued.

Allowing invocations also opens the floor to opposing views

The unusual mismatch, according to the report, is that a policy meant to permit religious invocations also gave space to an invocation that some participants strongly opposed. One council member later argued that allowing invocations means allowing viewpoints that may not reflect the council’s own views.
