Anthropic reportedly updated Claude’s usage policy to prohibit “sustained and needless abusive or cruel behavior” toward its models. The rules are said to take effect on November 12.

According to the report, the restriction is intended only for extreme, repeated conduct with no discernible purpose; ordinary frustration, pushback, dark creative themes, model testing, and research are said to be excluded. Claude’s ability to end abusive conversations would reportedly remain the main enforcement tool.
What makes the policy unusual is that it places a rule about users’ treatment of a chatbot alongside rules governing more conventional AI misuse. The report also says there is no established evidence that Claude experiences distress.
