A Neanderthal Wooden Club May Survive Only as Its Mineral Cast

Reading lost wood through negative casts in limestone

The strange part is that the wood itself is long gone. According to the report, calcium carbonate formed around the objects before they decayed, leaving negative casts in limestone; some reportedly preserve details down to the cellular level. The collection is presented as evidence that Neanderthals may have made a wider range of wooden objects than the surviving archaeological record usually shows.
