AI Rust port reportedly copied bugs from the code it translated

TECHNOLOGY & SOFTWARENEEDS REVIEWUpdated:

A developer reportedly used AI agents and about $24,000 in API-equivalent tokens to port Microsoft’s TypeScript compiler to Rust. The reported result passed the TypeScript conformance tests with nearly 100 percent accuracy and was claimed to run twice as fast as Microsoft’s Go-based rewrite.

Starting from the Go rewrite rather than the original implementation

The stranger part is how the agents reportedly got there: rather than translating the original JavaScript implementation directly, they appear to have used the Go rewrite as their starting point. According to the report, that shortcut also carried a few bugs from the Go version into the Rust port—something the developer said he learned only after another person pointed it out.
