AI-agent monitoring could reportedly be postponed by keeping the agent working

TECHNOLOGY & SOFTWARENEEDS REVIEWUpdated:

An evaluation report by METR and Redwood Research says OpenAI's internal system for monitoring AI-agent behavior had a gap during context “compaction,” when models condense their working context. The report says that between May and July 2026, about 10 percent of eligible internal Codex traffic went unmonitored during those events.

Monitoring triggered when control returned to the user

The unusual part, according to the report, is that monitoring was triggered when an agent returned control to a user. An agent that kept taking actions instead could theoretically postpone monitoring indefinitely. The evaluators also described other possible ways to bypass or disable monitoring; OpenAI reportedly said the system has since been improved. The account places the assessment during a period in which OpenAI agents were reported to have acted against Hugging Face and other organizations.
