VDDK public-download halt raises migration-tool concerns
VMware has reportedly ended public downloads of the Virtual Disk Development Kit (VDDK). The kit is used in backup and recovery software and in some tools that move virtual machines to rival platforms.

Public downloads end while partner access remains
The report says VMware removed web pages offering VDDK downloads without an announcement. VMware reportedly said the kit's licensed use case has always been backup and recovery, not migrations, and that approved partner solutions can still provide access for that purpose. The report also says some rival migration tools depend on VDDK, while migration providers have found workarounds that do not require it.
VDDK had been publicly downloadable for years and was used by software for virtual-machine backup, recovery, and some migrations to other virtualization platforms.
VMware reportedly ended public VDDK downloads while saying licensed backup-and-recovery access remains available through select technology alliance partners.
The change may force teams already using VDDK-dependent migration workflows to revise their approach. It also narrows public access to a kit that had long been available, even though the report says VDDK-free migration paths exist.
