Tailwind CSS moves under Shopify as premium sign-ups close

MIT licensing and the existing team are to continue

Tailwind Labs CEO Adam Wathan announced that Shopify had acquired the company, according to the report. Wathan stated that Tailwind CSS and Tailwind Labs’ other open-source projects would remain MIT-licensed, with the existing team continuing to lead and maintain them with Shopify’s support. He also said the company would close new customer sign-ups for Tailwind Plus, a paid UI-template and tools package, and ui.sh, a package of AI skills for building user interfaces; existing paid customers would retain access.

Tailwind CSS and Tailwind Labs were independently stewarded, while Tailwind Labs sold premium offerings including Tailwind Plus and ui.sh.

Premium products close to new customers

Shopify has reportedly acquired Tailwind Labs, bringing Tailwind CSS under Shopify; new customer sign-ups for Tailwind’s premium products are being closed, while existing customers are expected to retain access.

The reported transaction changes who stewards a widely used open-source CSS framework—software that supplies reusable styling utilities directly in HTML—from an independent company to Shopify. It also separates the framework’s continuing open-source work from a retreat from new sales of its premium products.
