Zeiss reportedly shifts SAP migration from greenfield to existing-system move

Moving the existing ERP landscape first

The report says Zeiss is changing how it moves from its ageing SAP R/3 system to SAP S/4HANA. Rather than a greenfield migration—rebuilding processes and shedding old customizations—the first step is now described as migrating the existing ERP landscape. Zeiss segments would then add individually configured solutions on top of a group-wide core system.

Zeiss had previously chosen a greenfield approach for its SAP migration, aiming to rebuild processes cleanly while leaving old customizations behind.

The company has reportedly realigned the project to first migrate its existing ERP landscape to SAP S/4HANA in a brownfield migration.

This is a material reversal in a long-running enterprise transformation: the initial route emphasized a clean start, while the new reported plan retains the existing landscape for the first move to S/4HANA.
