Android adds direct password-manager transfers

TechnologyUnverifiedUpdated:

Android reportedly now supports direct transfers between supported password managers. The process covers passkeys as well as passwords and offers a route without manual entry or unencrypted CSV exports.

Android adds direct password-manager transfers

On-device transfers across four supported apps

According to the report, a migration system integrated with Google Play Services lets Android verify the user's identity and transfer passwords and passkeys on the device after the destination password manager initiates an import. The report says support currently includes Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden, and Dashlane, on Android 8.0 Oreo or later. Password managers without support still require manual import or an unencrypted CSV; Google says additional support is planned without a timeline.

Moving logins between password managers required manually entering them or exporting an unencrypted CSV file.

Support depends on the Credential Transfer API

Android reportedly now supports an on-device transfer process for passwords and passkeys between password managers that implement the Credential Transfer API.

The reported change replaces a potentially exposed file-based export route with a direct transfer path for supported apps, while also moving passkeys as well as passwords.
