Microsoft reportedly elevates Rust to Tier 1 internal language

Rust joins the best-supported internal languages

A Microsoft principal engineer for the Rust tooling team said Rust is now a Tier 1 language at Microsoft. The reported designation puts it among the best-supported languages for internal development. The engineer also described tools and processes intended to support local Rust development across the software development lifecycle.

Rust was already used in more than 100 Microsoft project repositories.

Microsoft has reportedly placed Rust alongside C++, C#, and TypeScript as a Tier 1 language for internal development, with tooling and processes intended to support local development through the software lifecycle.

From existing use to an internal support tier

The reported designation adds lifecycle support to an existing presence in over 100 repositories. Rust’s design to prevent certain memory-related errors should be distinguished from how widely Microsoft will apply it.
