Four giant prints form what researchers describe as the first adult T. rex trackway

SCIENCEUnverifiedUpdated:

A reported set of four large footprints has shifted the evidence from isolated T. rex prints to a trackway that may preserve a single adult animal's movement across an ancient landscape.

Four giant prints form what researchers describe as the first adult T. rex trackway

Four footprints preserved in North Dakota

According to the report, researchers examined a roughly 7-meter trackway containing four weathered, three-toed prints. Each print is about 1 meter long and up to 0.80 meters wide. Based on the tracks' age, locality, and physical features, the researchers identify an adult Tyrannosaurus rex as the most likely trackmaker.

Researchers had identified only a couple of isolated footprints attributed to T. rex, rather than a continuous trackway.

Researchers now describe four preserved footprints in North Dakota as the first and only known trackway made by an adult T. rex.

Bones can reveal anatomy, while a trackway can record movement. The reported spacing suggests a roughly 4-meter stride and a speed of 1.5–2 meters per second, with the caution that prints do not perfectly reproduce feet.
