Cyberattack takes much of meteor-observation nonprofit’s site offline

A “critical blow” to aging infrastructure

According to the organization, a cyberattack dealt a “critical blow” to aging infrastructure. It says it is prioritizing fireball-observation reports while it transitions to replacement infrastructure and services. No group or individual is known to have claimed responsibility, and no ransom demand has been reported.

The International Meteor Organization’s website and related services were available for publishing and coordinating meteor observations.

Much of the organization’s site is now offline, and it expects partial service disruption for several weeks while moving to new infrastructure and services.

Migration while fireball reports take priority

The organization coordinates amateur and professional meteor observations and maintains databases containing observation reports, photos, and videos. A prolonged partial outage could limit access to a widely used observation and reporting resource.
