Discord Begins Age-Estimation Rollout With New Access Controls
Discord reportedly began rolling out automatic age estimation and several verification methods. The revised approach replaces an earlier emphasis on ID scans and facial estimates with age-group-based access controls.

Estimating age groups from account-use patterns
According to the report, Discord will estimate whether an account belongs to an adult (18+), a teen (13–17), or an unconfirmed user based on patterns of account behavior rather than messages, calls, or other content. Teen accounts would face additional defaults, including restricted access to age-gated servers, channels, and bot commands, while adults placed in another group can seek confirmation of their age. Discord reportedly expects the global rollout to take several days to reach all accounts.
Discord’s February plan reportedly would have required people seeking age-restricted servers or channels to submit an ID scan or use facial age estimation.
The revised system reportedly sorts accounts into adult, teen, or unconfirmed age groups using an age-estimation model. Adults who are categorized as teens or unconfirmed can use alternatives including a credit card check, an age-range signal from an app store, a Google Wallet ID pass where available, or k-ID’s AgeKey.
The change would move age checks from a request made only when someone seeks restricted content to a platform-wide system that assigns age groups and changes some safety defaults. It also adds ways to verify adulthood after privacy concerns prompted Discord to revise its earlier approach.
