Memory supply constraints are reportedly expected to extend through 2028

SemiconductorsUnverifiedUpdated:

Memory capacity for AI and servers is reportedly taking a larger share of production, while Micron and Samsung executives anticipate continued constraints on memory available for other uses through 2028.

Memory supply constraints are reportedly expected to extend through 2028

AI and server demand draw on production capacity

According to the report, Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra told investors that demand for Micron memory is expected to exceed available supply for at least the next couple of years.

He said high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for AI and DRAM for servers are drawing manufacturing capacity away from memory for consumer devices. Samsung executive Kim Taewoo also reportedly said HBM could account for almost 30 percent of DRAM manufacturers' wafer capacity in 2027, up from 20 percent this year.

The report compares Micron's 2027 memory prices with 2026 prices but gives no aggregate historical measure of the broader supply constraint.

Micron's CEO reportedly expects demand to exceed the company's available memory supply for at least the next couple of years, even as new clean rooms are planned for 2028. The report also says 75 percent of Micron's 2027 memory output is already accounted for.

HBM’s wafer share is expected to rise

The reported constraint concerns memory used across AI systems, servers, and consumer devices. The account links the tighter supply outlook to a shift in wafer capacity toward HBM, a high-performance memory type used for AI workloads.
