NYC window-AC battery program expands to 2,000 batteries

TechnologyUnverifiedUpdated:

Every Electric’s window-air-conditioner battery network reportedly expanded to two thousand units in New York City. About one thousand households participated in summer 2026, up from one hundred batteries across sixty-five households the year before.

NYC window-AC battery program expands to 2,000 batteries

Charging off-peak and discharging while air conditioners run

According to Ars Technica, local startup Every Electric distributed batteries that charge during lower-demand periods and discharge while connected window air conditioners run during peak demand. The company remotely manages the battery cycles as part of a virtual power plant—a network of distributed energy resources operated together.

Every Electric's first summer test in 2025 deployed 100 batteries in 65 households, according to the report.

The reported deployment grew to 2,000 batteries in about 1,000 households, or about 4 MWh of distributed storage, during summer 2026.

The reported expansion distributes storage across homes rather than placing the same capacity in one utility-scale battery installation. The program is described as allowing participating households to keep compatible window AC units running while reducing their grid draw during peak periods.
