arXiv reportedly caps researchers at two submissions a month

SoftwareUnverifiedUpdated:

The reported limits would restrict how many manuscripts an individual researcher can submit or keep active, as arXiv says volunteer moderators are being overwhelmed by low-quality, AI-written papers.

arXiv reportedly caps researchers at two submissions a month

Two monthly submissions and three active items

404 Media reports that arXiv, an open-access preprint repository, has announced submission rate limits: two items per calendar month for a researcher and no more than three active submissions.

The report says arXiv cited an influx of low-quality papers written with AI tools and pressure on its volunteer moderation team. It also attributes to arXiv figures of 40,363 submissions in September 2026, compared with 20,569 in September 2024.

arXiv had rate limiting in its policy, but its application was left to individual moderators’ discretion, according to the report.

The reported policy applies a repository-wide cap of two submissions per researcher per calendar month and three active submissions at a time.

A response to pressure on volunteer moderation

The reported change would make submission caps a common rule across a major research preprint repository rather than a decision left to individual moderators. It illustrates a reported operational response to AI-generated material that arXiv says does not meet its scholarly standards.
