Single-radio demonstration combines Wi-SUN HAN and Wi-SUN FAN for smart-meter communications

SCIENCEUnverifiedUpdated:

A Kyoto University research group says it demonstrated a module that combines communications between smart meters and utilities with communications between meters and home energy-management systems, using one radio and common firmware.

Single-radio demonstration combines Wi-SUN HAN and Wi-SUN FAN for smart-meter communications

Two in-home and outdoor standards on one radio

According to the group, its module ran Wi-SUN FAN, intended for the outdoor-side link between a power smart meter and a utility, alongside Wi-SUN HAN, used for the in-home link between a meter and a home energy-management system (HEMS). In a HEMS-oriented model, it reported a Wi-SUN FAN data-delivery rate of at least 99.99% and a 99.95% on-time response rate for Wi-SUN HAN power-value reads at 10-second intervals.

The group had announced common firmware for both standards in May 2026. The source describes the newly added functions as radio-sharing arbitration and rapid physical-layer switching.

The reported firmware adds a mechanism for time-sharing one radio between the two standards and a function that switches communication methods in about 1 millisecond round trip while maintaining connection states.

Delivery and timely-response rates measured separately

The experiment reportedly integrates two standards used on opposite sides of a smart meter in one radio module. The group describes lower cost and smaller wireless sections as expected applications; deployment in operating metering systems is not established by the report.
