AI reportedly beat a Stratego champion by guessing hidden pieces

TECHNOLOGY & SOFTWARENEEDS REVIEWUpdated:

Stratego hides the identities of nearly all of each player’s pieces until they collide, a feature that reportedly kept the game out of reach for leading game-playing AI systems. A research team says its system, Ataraxos, beat Stratego champion Pim Niemeijer 15 games to one, with four draws, in a 20-game online match.

Inferring hidden boards from the opponent’s earlier moves

Ataraxos reportedly did not try to enumerate every hidden board. Before choosing a move, a second neural network reportedly estimated which hidden pieces were plausible from an opponent’s earlier moves. The system then sampled possible boards and tested candidate moves. The researchers say this let it make calm-looking bluffs and recoveries that humans struggle to sustain when they know information their opponent lacks.

According to the account, the system was trained using 16 GPUs for a week, plus four GPUs for four days for the hidden-piece model.
