Doom reportedly rendered through SQL database queries

TECHNOLOGY & SOFTWARENEEDS REVIEWUpdated:

Lukas Vogel’s SQLDoom reportedly runs Doom’s game logic and rendering through CedarDB tables and roughly 1,300 lines of SQL, while a small Python client handles input, timing, and displaying frames. The project is reported to produce full-color 640×480 output resembling the original game, with performance of about 60 fps on a Ryzen 7 laptop and drops to 35 fps in busy scenes.

Database queries doing a game engine’s work

The setup is unusual because a database query system is doing work normally associated with a game engine. According to the report, precomputed sorting data lets SQL decide which wall sections to draw for each frame, while a separate workaround renders floors and ceilings.
