Thirty old Mac Minis reportedly become a Cray-1 replica

PRODUCTS & DEVICESNEEDS REVIEWUpdated:

A report says Spain’s Museo de Historia de la Computación has built a full-scale visual replica of the 1976 Cray-1 using 30 mostly 2012-era Mac Minis. The machines are reportedly networked as a cluster, with 64 active processing cores producing 1.3 teraflops in the most recent tests using a custom matrix-multiplication Python script.

Old consumer computers reportedly exceed the original’s theoretical peak

The oddity is not just the retro exterior: the replica is said to outperform the original Cray-1’s approximately 160-megaflop theoretical peak, while using consumer computers more than a decade old. The report attributes the cluster’s near-silent operation to vertically mounted Macs, a steel chassis, and aluminum trays that let heat rise through the tower without added fans.
