A claim that Doom ran through DNS lookups

TECHNOLOGY & SOFTWARENEEDS REVIEWUpdated:

A report says Doom was made to run as a turn-based program whose arithmetic and memory are held in DNS records. A small external program reportedly provided the wiring and clock, while DNS handled key-value reads, conditional writes, and precomputed arithmetic answers.

A claim that Doom ran through DNS lookups

54.4 seconds per input remains far from the intended pace

The report says one press of the Right key initially took 577 seconds. After changes including UDP lookups and fewer DNS queries per instruction, it reportedly fell to 54.4 seconds—still far from Doom’s intended 35 ticks per second. The account attributes the limit to the number of DNS exchanges required for each operation, rather than the speed of an individual BIND response.

The report also says the setup used 6.4 million precomputed DNS records and compared each generated frame with an independent emulator.
