Milky Way Radio Source Reportedly Rebrightened as Its Spectrum Reversed

SCIENCE & PHYSICSNEEDS REVIEWUpdated:

A reported radio source in the far reaches of the Milky Way appears to have stayed radio-bright for roughly two decades, then brightened again after fading. Its radio-spectrum peak reportedly moved down from about 1.9 GHz in 2019 to about 0.8 GHz in 2024, before rising to about 2.2 GHz in 2026.

Milky Way Radio Source Reportedly Rebrightened as Its Spectrum Reversed

A spectral peak rises again without apparent expansion

The odd part is that the source showed little apparent expansion despite those changes. An expanding cloud producing synchrotron radiation would be expected to show a more predictable shift toward lower frequencies, according to the report. The researchers propose that a compact object feeding on a companion star, with jets interacting with a dense wind, could account for the behavior and the lack of detected X-rays—but say the object has not been identified conclusively.
